Restrictions on marijuana use in Thailand

Thailand has recently seen a boom in the popularity of marijuana. After the plant was removed from the drug list, stores selling cannabis products began to open across the country. However, the lack of regulation has led to a massive uncontrolled recreational use of marijuana. This has caused many problems, especially in the tourism industry. Therefore, the Thai government has decided to limit the use of marijuana to medical purposes only. Let's take a closer look at the reasons behind this decision and its possible consequences.

Reasons for restricting recreational use

Initially, the idea of decriminalizing marijuana was promoted by the Bumiaztai Party. The aim was to allow the use of cannabis in medicine, food and beverages. In practice, however, this has led to an uncontrolled increase in recreational use.

In the country's major tourist cities, such as Pattaya and Phuket, stores selling marijuana have sprung up on every street. At the same time, the vast majority of them offered products intended specifically for recreational use.

This has caused serious problems in the tourism industry. It was not uncommon for tourists to overdose and lose consciousness, for which they had to be hospitalized.

Tourists from countries where marijuana use is illegal have also had difficulties. Some unwittingly broke the law by consuming food and drinks containing cannabis ingredients.

Most hotels are forced to completely ban smoking marijuana on their premises because it disturbs other guests.

Opinion of the tourism sector

Representatives of the tourism industry were generally positive about the government's decision to limit the use of marijuana to medical purposes.

In their view, unregulated recreational use has done far more harm than good to the tourism industry.

The head of the Pattaya Hotel Union noted that the abundance of marijuana outlets gives tourists the false impression that the city is designed solely for its use.

The Phuket Hotel Association expressed a similar position. According to them, even without the legalization of marijuana, the island successfully restored the tourist flow to pre-pandemic levels.

Thus, the ban on recreational use will not affect the development of tourism in the region in any way. Moreover, it will make it possible to get rid of many related problems.

Prospects for medical use

Although the recreational use of marijuana will be banned, its medical use is still allowed. To ensure the safety and effectiveness of treatment, it is necessary to strengthen state control in this area. In particular, it is planned to tighten licensing requirements for the production and trade of medical marijuana.

Quality and safety standards for the relevant products will also be introduced. In addition, medical workers will be trained in the proper use of cannabis products. As a result, patients will be able to receive effective and safe treatment based on marijuana components under medical supervision.
