Thailand's Railway Transport Department said the number of people traveling on trains, including the Bangkok subway as well as inter-area routes, approached 2 million on May 4 and 5, which was King Rama X's coronation weekend.
Passenger traffic rose by more than 2.5% in two days, department director general Pichet Kunadhamrax said.
He noted that the State Railway Company of Thailand (SRT) carried 122,873 passengers in two days. The largest number of passengers was on the SRT southern line (46,755), followed by the northeast line (30,372), the northern line (21,204) and the eastern line (15,929). An additional 8,613 people traveled along the Mahachai-Maekklong route.
In Bangkok, 1,779,354 people traveled by rail over the two weekend, Pichet said. Bangkok's mass transit system carried 1,111,619 passengers in two days, followed by the subway (542,609) and Aeroexpress (97,535).
There were two minor incidents on Friday, one on the northeast SRT line and the other on the Aeroexpress. At the Bang Pa-In station in Ayutthaya, a man broke his arm after being hit by a train. The train, which arrived at the Lat Krabang Aeroexpress station, had brakes broken, but they were quickly repaired and the train continued to move.
