Struggle for tourist confidence in Thailand

Thai authorities are abandoning the introduction of a tourist tax that was planned under the previous government. The decision comes in light of a number of incidents that have undermined foreign visitors' confidence in the safety of the kingdom.

Negative developments

There have been several high-profile incidents involving visitors recently, including an armed attack at a shopping mall in Bangkok. Another scandal erupted when a private clinic refused to provide emergency treatment to a tourist from Taiwan, leading to his death.

Such cases are of great concern to the government leadership. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is aware of the need to restore the shaken confidence of travelers. For this purpose, it is proposed to introduce life and health insurance for foreigners up to 1 million baht in case of death or serious injury.

Finding the best solution

To find the best way to protect the kingdom's visitors, the government has instructed the tourism authority to develop specific measures. The Prime Minister emphasized that the new administration refuses to introduce a 300-baht tourist levy.

Previously, 50 million baht a year from the state budget was allocated to help victims. However, it is now planned to fully insure all vacationers in the kingdom. This will require a much more substantial expenditure.

To determine the optimal insurance format, the ministry will consult with other agencies and financial regulators. It is also planned to work closely with the police to ensure the safety of tourists.

Experts believe that reliable insurance will increase the confidence of travelers. At the same time, it is considered important to clearly specify compensation depending on the nature of the damage caused.
