New restrictions on the campaign budget in Thailand

The Electoral Commission in Thailand (EC) has announced new restrictions on the budget for election campaigns in the country. Under the changes to the electoral law, the maximum campaign budget for each participant will be 44 million baht for a party list and 1.9 million baht for a constitutional district candidate.

However, if the elections are not held on schedule, but are held earlier, then the budget will be significantly reduced. The EC has determined that if elections are not held as scheduled, the campaign budget for constitutional district candidates will be reduced to 630,000 baht for existing candidates and 950,000 baht for new candidates.

If there are re-elections, the campaign budget will be raised to 1.9 million baht per candidate. If the majority of voters voted against all candidates, then the campaign budget for each new candidate will be 950,000 baht.

The EC has warned that any party that violates campaign budget limits or other electoral laws could be disbanded. Campaign budget caps will be tighter this time around and help make elections more fair and transparent in Thailand.
