Strengthening COVID-19 outbreak in Thailand and vaccination effectiveness: subspecies analysis using Singapore as an example

Thailand's COVID-19 outbreak continues to escalate, with deaths nearly doubling from the previous week.

The weekly number of hospitalizations reached 2,632, with a daily average of 376 cases. The weekly number of deaths was 64, with a daily average of 9 deaths, an increase of 42 deaths from the previous week.

Dr. Thira published on Facebook data on the severity of the disease for each subtype of coronovirus among the vaccinated population in Singapore, based on studies conducted by the Singapore Ministry of Health and published in "medRxiv" on May 10 this year.

Comparison of the XBB.1.5, XBB.1.16, XBB.1.9, and XBB.2.3 COVID-19 subspecies in a vaccinated population in Singapore that predominantly received mRNA-based vaccines yielded the following results:

The incidence of severe disease was approximately 6-8%.

The incidence of diseases leading to hospitalization was 29-37%.

The incidence of mild illness not requiring hospitalization was approximately 55-63%.

The XBB.2.3 subspecies, which is the latest subspecies monitored by the World Health Organization, has an infection and hospitalization rate of 37%, 3-8% higher than the other subspecies, Dr. Thira said.
