A fascinating journey along the route of rescuing Thai teenagers from a flooded cave

New hiking trail at Wild Boar Rescue Cave

Thailand's National Parks Department has launched a new tourist route allowing visitors to experience the Wild Boars team's rescue operation. The route follows part of the Thamluang cave system, where five years ago a massive operation unfolded to rescue young soccer players and their coach from flooded underground caves.

Now tour groups, under the supervision of guides, will be able to descend into Chamber No3, which was the epicenter of the rescue operation. The tour will take about three hours and will allow guests not only to see the site of the operation, but also to better understand all its stages and complexities.

Safety requirements

For reasons of tourist safety, groups of no more than 10 people accompanied by a guide can descend into the chamber at a time. Everyone must be in good physical shape to overcome slippery areas, steep descents and narrow passages.

In some places it is necessary to walk in a line. For safety tourists are given special protective equipment. Only two excursions to Chamber No3 are organized per day to minimize the risks.

Recreating the atmosphere of a rescue operation

In the Chamber, tourists can see the same ropes, electrical wiring and oxygen tubes that were used during the rescue operation five years ago. Guides demonstrate how the transportation of the rescued boys was carried out.

Participants of the operation, acting as guides, share their memories of those dramatic events. They talk about the difficulties faced by the rescuers and the moments when the situation seemed hopeless. These personal stories help campers better understand the magnitude and importance of the operation to save the children.

Future plans

The authorities have no plans to open the cave sections behind Chamber No3 to the general public for the time being. However, expeditions will be organized for professional researchers and experienced speleologists to explore deeper parts of the system.

Special guides are being trained to ensure the safety of such expeditions. The tourist route to Chamber No3 is intended not only to attract visitors, but also to honor the memory of the participants of the rescue operation, whose incredible efforts made it possible to bring the boys back to life.
