Phuket officials have taken steps to be fully prepared for the possibility of further earthquakes following the one in neighboring Phang Nga province on Feb. 13. An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 occurred in the Tambon Tha Na area, Kapong County. So far there have been no reports of any damage or casualties.
Chomfari Chompurat of Thailand's meteorological department noted that the quake was shallow - with a focus only four kilometers deep - and urged everyone to stay up to date through tmd's earthquake monitoring department or through other media.
Phuket residents know that earthquakes can happen in their area as well; back in 2015, there were six tremors ranging from 2.5 to 4.6 on the Richter scale, which led to destruction in resorts and in nearby settlements. The most recent earthquake occurred near Yao-yai Island, east of Phuket, due to the Klong Marui Fault, located nearby in Phang Nga Province.
