During the first four days of the Songkran holiday in Thailand, 1,055 traffic accidents were recorded. These accidents claimed the lives of 114 people and injured another 1,064. The highest death toll was recorded in Bangkok - nine people. At the same time, 19 provinces did not report deaths in the first three days of the holiday.
As noted by the Center for Road Safety, most accidents were caused by speeding or drunk driving, with motorcycles accounting for about 80% of all accidents. The most dangerous places are rural roads and tracks.
According to the Director General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Relief, Buntham Lertsukhikasem, statistics show that most accidents occur between 17:00 and 18:00. In addition, the largest proportion of victims falls on the age group from 30 to 39 years.
However, in addition to violations of traffic rules, an important factor in accidents on the roads is also a lack of attention and caution on the part of drivers. The roads during the Songkran festival can be very crowded, and drivers should be prepared for such conditions.
In this regard, law enforcement agencies and road services are taking measures to improve road safety during the holiday. However, the main task is to realize the risks and the responsibility of each road user for their actions.
Thus, the Songkran holiday can become not only a time of fun, but also a dangerous period on the roads.
To avoid tragedies, you must follow the rules of the road, be careful.
