On Sunday morning, Lek Bun-Eir, a 109-year-old local resident of Uttaradita, was led by her family to go to the polls at Na Noi Wittaya School in Muang County. Grandma Lek is the oldest resident of Uttaradit and has never missed her right to vote, whether in local or national elections, village chairman Khat Ngiu Noi Yotsombat said.
He explained that Lek was born in 1914, during the reign of King Rama VI, and is one of the few people in Thailand to have survived five royal reigns.
Also voting in this constituency was Saranwut Saranket, a former MP for the Phu Thai Party in Uttaradit, who is now running in constituency number 3 under the auspices of the United Thai Nation (UTN) party. His daughter Rossarine is also running for UTN MP in constituency 2.
He said that after the vote, he would go to Phraya Pichai's monument to honor his memory and ask for blessings, and then go home to oversee the counting of votes. Phraya Pichai was the ruler of the northern province during the Thonburi era (1767-1851) and became famous for successfully repelling the attack of the Myanmar army.
Today's voting day has become not only a historic event for Uttaradit, but also a notable symbol of remembrance and active participation of citizens. Unique people like Lek Bun-Eir remind us of the importance of our voice and participation in elections.
