The Old Siam Plaza, one of Bangkok's most famous malls, is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary with a 400 million baht renovation. Developer Siam Sindhorn plans to transform the three-story market into a "shopping and business hub". Opened in 1993, The Old Siam Plaza is a treasure trove of Thai silk, traditional food and desserts.
The architecture of the plaza is unique, modeled after the colonial style buildings of the reign of King Rama V (1853-1910). It also enjoys a privileged location surrounded by Tri Phet, Burapha, Phakhurat and Charoen Krung roads.
The Old Siam is located in Phra Nakhon, along with Yaowarat (Chinatown) and Pak Khlong Talat (flower market). In addition, there is parking for more than 1,100 cars and it is close to the Sam Yot metro station.
"The new Old Siam will be a business, lifestyle, shopping and housing hub for modern people," said Apichai Siridumrongfun, Siam Sindhorn's Deputy Managing Director of Commercial Development. He also added that they want to create a cozy atmosphere for tourists visiting the historic island of Rattanakosin.
Renovation works will cover 99,000 sq.m. service areas and 17,950 sq.m. retail space, including re-planning of premises to meet the needs of customers and businesses.
