In the coming years, Thailand will face serious problems in the development of the economy if political parties do not pay due attention to environmental issues and attract foreign investors. This opinion was expressed by leading economist Aat Pisanwanich, who heads the Center for International Trade Research of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
According to the expert, foreign investors need a clear policy agenda for the next government to convince them to invest in the Thai economy. Otherwise, Thailand risks being left without the necessary foreign capital for its development.
One of the main hurdles for investors in Thailand are environmental issues. If today companies create production in accordance with the current legislation of Thailand, then the products they produce will not be able to be exported to the European Union due to non-compliance with the requirements of "green" standards.
The European Union plans to introduce the CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism), under which businesses that emit more than a certain threshold of carbon emissions will be subject to a carbon tax. This tax will be around 85 euros (3,155 baht) for every tonne of carbon dioxide emissions.
This mechanism will come into force in 2026.
