Thailand strengthens its position in the global startup ecosystem
Thailand continues to show its growth in startups and innovation, ranking 52nd in the global startup ecosystem. This is confirmed by the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2023 report, published by the well-known information center for startup ecosystems - StartupBlink. Over the past year, the country has moved up one position, ranking 52nd among the top 100 countries.
Bangkok is the leading startup hub in Thailand
Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, has become the leading startup hub in the country. Over the past year, the city has jumped 25 positions to rank 74th in the global start-up cities rankings. This result surpassed 87th-ranked Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and placed Bangkok in third place among Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) cities.
Bangkok is not only the political and economic center of Thailand, but also an important catalyst for the development of the startup community. The city offers unique opportunities for entrepreneurs and innovators, including access to a wide range of investors, a highly skilled workforce, and a diverse startup ecosystem.
Bangkok also has a strong presence in the transport industry, as evidenced by its impressive 43rd place in the world rankings. This indicates that startups in Bangkok continue to demonstrate innovative potential and attractiveness to investors.
In addition to Bangkok, three other provinces in Thailand have been identified as important players in the global startup ecosystem. Chiang Mai ranked 591st, Phuket 640th and Pattaya 849th in the top 1000 cities with the best startup ecosystem. This confirms that innovative and entrepreneurial opportunities are not limited to the capital, but extend to other regions of Thailand.
Promoting Startups and Innovation in Thailand
The National Innovation Agency (NIA) is actively working to develop the startup ecosystem in Thailand. They aim to turn Thailand into a thriving hub for startups and investors from all over the world. To do this, Global Hubs were created in three key areas - Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the Eastern Special Economic Zone (EEC).
These hubs provide comprehensive support and resources for startups and investors, both local and foreign, to facilitate business and investment in Thailand. They also help build sustainable cities and improve the quality of life for city dwellers. This is achieved through the development of innovative districts, which have significant potential for entrepreneurship.
Bangkok has already established four innovation districts: Yothi Medical Innovation District (YMID), Cyber-Tech Innovation District, Ari Innovation District and Kluaynamthai Innovation District (KIID). Also, two innovation districts have been established in Chiang Mai: Suandok Medical Innovation District (SMID) and Maejo Agriculture and Food Innovation District (MAID). Innovation districts have also been established in the Eastern Special Economic Zone near Pattaya to attract startups and investors.
In addition to creating innovative districts, the Thai government is actively implementing various programs and support measures. For example, they provide tax breaks, subsidies and grants for new-enterprises. Special training programs and accelerators are also being developed to help entrepreneurs develop their skills and expand their business opportunities.
In addition, Thailand actively attracts foreign projects and investors, providing them with favorable conditions for business development. Visa facilitation, the creation of special work visas for entrepreneurs, and access to international markets make Thailand an attractive destination for international start-ups.
Prospects for the Future of the Startup Ecosystem in Thailand
Thailand shows potential for further growth in start-ups and innovation. Thanks to the active support of the government, the creation of innovative regions, the attraction of foreign start-ups and investors, the country creates a favorable environment for the development of entrepreneurship.
However, Thailand also faces challenges, among which are competition from other countries in the region, the need to continue to improve the business climate and ensure access to a quality educational base and a talented workforce.
However, with current progress and strategic initiatives, Thailand is well positioned to become one of the leading start-up and innovation hubs in the Southeast Asian Association of Nations region and strengthen its position on the global stage.
