Tourism resurgence: Record growth in passengers in Thailand in the first quarter of 2023

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), the number of passengers on airlines increased by 12% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to last year. The total number of trips was 30.6 million, an increase of 3.5 million year-on-year. This is due to the lifting of travel restrictions in many countries, especially in China, as well as extended holidays and the start of the tourist season.

In the first quarter of 2023, the number of foreign visitors to Thailand rose to 4 million, with the largest number coming from:

  • Malaysia (594 112),
  • Russia (413 525),
  • South Korea (326,902),
  • China (247,497),
  • USA (164,416)
  • Germany (153 329),
  • Great Britain (151 590),
  • Laos (141,395),
  • Vietnam (140,919).

According to Visa International (Thailand), the top 5 popular destinations for Thai tourists abroad in the first quarter of 2023 included: Japan (81%),

  • South Korea (52%),
  • New Zealand (43%),
  • Singapore (41%),
  • Great Britain (35%).

Simplification of entry rules to Japan has helped increase the number of Thai tourists to this country.

The second quarter of 2023 is expected to lead to an increase in the number of Thai tourists traveling abroad. According to air booking data, the most popular destinations will be:

  • Germany (18.47%),
  • South Korea (14.32%),
  • UK (13.36%)
  • Japan (11.79%),
  • Hong Kong (8.45%),
  • Australia (8.27%),
  • USA (8.04%),
  • France (6.14%),
  • Taiwan (5.61%),
  • Switzerland (5.55%).
