According to International Living's latest report on the Global Retirement Index, Thailand and Italy were ranked ninth overall in their "10 Most Affordable Places to Live After Retirement" list for 2023. Portugal took the top spot thanks to its weak currency and visa process, with Mexico following close behind. Panama, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Spain, Greece, France and Thailand/Italy round out the top ten respectively.

The criteria used to compile the rankings include cost of living, climate comfort, ease of obtaining a visa, housing affordability, and healthcare costs.
