Tragedy off the coast of a tropical paradise: how a boat with Russian tourists sank

An excursion boat with six Russian tourists on board unexpectedly sank during a one-day boat trip around the islands of the archipelago. Fortunately, all passengers and crew members of the boat were evacuated in time and were not injured. Nevertheless, the accident revealed a number of violations in the work of local tour operators and once again raised the issue of safety of sea excursions for foreigners.

The course of the tragedy

The boat "Martini" departed in the morning from the pier of Chalong Tourist Center in eastern Phuket. There were 9 people on board: 6 Russian tourists, including children, and a crew of three Thais. The plan was to visit several popular islands of the archipelago. However, around 16 hours, when the ship was near the island of Hay, there was an accident - due to a leak in the pipes, the engine room quickly filled with water. Despite the crew's desperate attempts to pump out the water, the boat lost speed and began to sink. Fortunately, the weather was good at the time and the crew of the Panva Princess, which was nearby, managed to quickly evacuate everyone from the Martini.

Causes of the tragedy

According to preliminary data, the cause of flooding was an elementary fault - a leak in the water pipes. However, violations on the part of the boat owner also played a role. It turned out that the boat lacked some mandatory licenses, and it was not used for its intended purpose. The local authorities promised to conduct a thorough investigation and punish those responsible. Special attention will be paid to the safety of tourists during sea excursions.

Implications for tourism

This incident has once again drawn attention to the problems of organizing sea excursions in Phuket and the need to improve their safety. Although it was a safe accident in this case, such accidents can have dire consequences. The popularity of Phuket as a seaside resort largely depends on how comfortable and safe tourists will feel here. Therefore, the authorities of the island should pay increased attention to control over compliance with all the rules of organizing sea excursions in order to exclude such accidents in the future. Phuket's reputation as a reliable and attractive destination for tourists from all over the world depends on this.
