On Saturday in Lat Krabang, a district of Bangkok, the opening of the first farmers' market took place, which will be open every weekend from 6 to 11 am. The market offers a wide selection of agricultural products, processed goods and healthy products from local farmers. In addition, the market offers local delicacies from the surrounding areas such as Khlong Sam Ua, Vangthonglang, Prawet, Lat Phrao, Bueng Kum and Bang Kapi.
Bangkok Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangbun attended the opening ceremony of the market. He noted that buyers receive vegetable seedlings for every 100 baht spent at the market. So far, more than 300 seedlings of vegetables such as chili, eggplant and sweet basil have been distributed.
Sanon also noted that the Department of Social Development has already conducted a survey among residents about organizing other farmers' markets and the list includes Chatuchak, Wachirabenjatas (Suan Rot Fai) and Lumpini parks.
"Farmers' markets not only boost the economy of local communities, but also provide Bangkok residents with easy access to high-quality organic produce," Sanon said.
"This project also promotes organic farming throughout the city so people can grow their own vegetables, reduce costs, and share produce with government agencies and schools."
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has announced his policy of organizing farmers' markets in each of the city's 50 districts, where local farmers can sell their produce directly to consumers.
