After three years of severely curtailed Songkran celebrations due to Covid-19, Thailand's tourism industry is gearing up to welcome tourists from all over the world to the popular Songkran celebration.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Songkran celebration is expected to generate an additional 18 billion baht and attract more than 300,000 foreign tourists. Nearly 4 million Thais and about 300,000 foreign tourists are planning to travel around the country during the long holiday break.
TAT reports that Thailand's tourism market recovered 65% from pre-Covid-19 levels in 2019. Tourists are returning to the country again in large numbers, especially from the countries of Southeast and East Asia.
The Songkran festival, which is famous as the biggest water battle in the world, this year attracted many tourists from India, Taiwan, Japan, China, South Korea, France and Russia. Border crossings with neighboring Malaysia and Laos are also seeing a surge in traffic during the holidays.
TAT is holding "Water Festival 2023" in five major regions of the country from Thursday to Saturday. This year's theme is "How Thai are you?".
