Tragedy in Bangkok: a teenager opened fire in a shopping center

Shooting at Siam Paragon - three dead in Bangkok

On Thursday, November 2, 2023, a shocking tragedy occurred in Bangkok - a 14-year-old teenager opened fire in the Siam Paragon shopping mall, killing 3 people and injuring 4 others. The incident shocked the residents of the Thai capital and stirred memories of past mass shootings, which periodically occur in this country due to the wide availability of firearms.

A chronicle of the tragedy

The shooting began around 4:20 p.m. local time on the first floor of the Siam Paragon shopping center in the heart of Bangkok. A teenager dressed in a black shirt and camouflage pants pulled out a gun and opened fire on people. Panic instantly gripped the mall - there were screams, hundreds of people scattered, trying to escape the bullets.

Some witnesses took refuge in stores and cafes, while others ran outside into the pouring rain. Employees of the shopping center evacuated people through all exits. According to eyewitnesses, more than 10 shots rang out.

As a result of indiscriminate shooting, 3 people were killed and 4 others were injured of varying degrees of severity. Among the injured is one foreign national.

Police and capture of the shooter

Police and SWAT officers immediately went to the scene. They managed to quickly track down and apprehend the suspect - at 17:10 the 14-year-old shooter was arrested at the neighboring Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok. The teenager offered no resistance and voluntarily surrendered his weapon.

The three injured, including a foreigner, were hospitalized at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. Another injured person is at the General Police Hospital in the capital. Doctors assess the condition of all those hospitalized as stable.

Causes and Investigations

The motives for the shooting are still unknown - the police have launched an investigation into the causes and circumstances of the tragedy. The Prime Minister of Thailand promised to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and ensure the safety of citizens.

Experts note that in recent years in Thailand has sharply increased the number of mass shootings. The reason is attributed to the wide availability of firearms among the population.

The bloodiest incident occurred in 2020, when a former military man shot and killed 29 people in a shopping center. Also fresh in the minds of the Thai people are memories of the attack on a kindergarten in 2017, the victims of which were 36 people.

Experts are calling on authorities to tighten laws on keeping and bearing arms to prevent such tragedies from happening again. So far, the shooting at Siam Paragon has once again demonstrated the fragility of public safety in Thailand.
