Thailand prepares for weather anomalies: cyclone and drought

The Thai authorities are preparing for two major weather events that could affect the lives of citizens in the coming months. First, Cyclone Mocha is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal this week, bringing heavy rain to the north of the country from Thursday to Sunday. At the same time, the country is facing a period of drought in the second half of the year, caused by the El Niño phenomenon.

According to the Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Chaivut Thanakamanusorn, to date, there are no signs that Cyclone Mocha will reach Thailand in the near future, but its impact will be felt in the form of heavy rain. Some areas of the country may experience floods and landslides.

In addition, Chaiwut warns of a coming drought that could engulf Thailand from June to December, and possibly even into February. Temperatures are expected to rise by 0.5-1 degrees Celsius, which could greatly affect agriculture. In 2016, Thailand experienced one of the most severe El Niño droughts, which resulted in significant agricultural problems such as crop losses and lack of water for livestock.

To deal with these challenges, the Thai authorities are already taking action. They are going to stock up on enough drinking water. In addition, they urge the people of the country to be vigilant and follow the weather forecasts in order to avoid possible troubles.
