Man's friends: pet dogs chase wild elephants out of residential area

A scene worthy of a comedy film played out in front of the villagers on Friday evening when a wild herd of elephants was forced to leave the village of Ban Khlong Mahad in Ta Takiab district of Chachoengsao province. This was reported by Somwong Chanthachote, the head of the "Elephant Conservation Volunteers" in the village.

He noted that wild elephants often come out of the nearby forest to eat mangoes and star gooseberries in the plantations, and a volunteer group has been set up to protect the area.

On Friday, a herd of elephants encountered a dozen domestic dogs, who had no fear of the giants, and drove them back into the forest.

One eyewitness, Manat Chayasit, captured the incredible scene on video. Video footage shows how elephants, startled by a sudden attack by dogs, scatter in an attempt to elude them.

The crowd of dogs, barking merrily and loudly, did not retreat and did not give the wild elephants the opportunity to return to the village. They drove the elephants throughout the forest, breaking up the herd into smaller groups.

This spectacle won the hearts of the villagers, who were happy to watch such a fascinating confrontation. The elephants soon realized that they had no chance of defeating this daring group of dogs and fled deep into the forest.
