Thai banks fight cybercrime: new service warns of online fraud

In light of the increase in online fraud in Thailand, the Digital Economy and Society Ministry has teamed up with 16 banks to launch a new channel that will alert customers to fake news and online fraud through mobile banking apps.

In February, the Thai Bankers' Association warned that online scammers are swindling out about 500 million baht (about $15 million) a year by tricking people into clicking on a link that secretly installs a program on their computer or phone.

Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn, oversaw the signing ceremony for the launch of a new mobile banking-based alert application, which took place on Wednesday. The ceremony was also attended by representatives of 16 banks and the Bank of Thailand.

Chaivut noted that such cooperation enhances efforts to prevent cybercrime by providing useful information to the society and informing them about the latest developments in the field of combating cybercrime. The ministry has led a collaboration with the Bank of Thailand to use the Pao Tang app, which has over 40 million users, as an online channel to alert users of fraud by the end of 2022.
