Koh Tao translates as "turtle island". The name appeared in ancient times, when there were many such reptiles in these places. However, even now tourists from different countries call Turtle Island. The turtle is a symbol of modern Koh Tao, although the likelihood of meeting them in nature is very small.

What attracts tourists to Koh Tao?

Guests of Thailand, regardless of financial condition, on Koh Tao are waiting for a variety of entertainment. Sandy beaches stretching for kilometers along the surface of the sea, amazing jungle landscapes, bars and restaurants. In the cozy harbor of Tahote, lovers of diving (deep-sea diving with equipment for breathing underwater) and snorkeling (swimming at shallow depths with a mask, snorkel and fins) gather.

The splendor of the deep sea is often the main goal of a visit to Koh Tao. And this is no coincidence - in the coastal waters of the island you can find turtles, rays, reef and whale sharks, barracuda. The wonders of the underwater world open up in all their glory just off the coast, so you don’t even need to sail far into the sea. The water is clean and transparent.

The resort offers services for people with different levels of training - experienced divers will hone their skills; and instructors will teach the beginners the basics. You can acquire the skills necessary for diving in one of the many diving schools. The staff of all schools speaks English, so there will be no problems with the language barrier. A particularly pleasant moment for our compatriots will be the frequent presence of employees who speak Russian. There is no need for personal equipment - everything is issued at the school. Upon completion of training, the tourist receives a diver's certificate.

Most travelers who prefer exclusively beach holidays choose other resorts - the seabed near most of the beaches of Turtle Island is replete with stones, rocks rise from the water. But divers will not find a better place for their hobby. An amazing variety of underwater flora and fauna will appear before the eyes of the diver.

Snorkeling

For those who, for one reason or another, are not ready to go down to great depths, snorkeling is suitable. You can do this without moving away from the coast, on any island beach. Tourists will get the most vivid impressions from snorkeling in the bays of Mango Bay, Ao Leuk, Shark Bay, as well as not far from Haad Sai Deng beach on the eastern coast of the island.

Important information for swimmers - in the last two of the listed locations, reef sharks are found. This species of marine predators is considered not prone to aggression and is safe for humans. However, you should not tempt fate and swim up to the animal - when you see a shark, try to carefully leave this place without sudden movements and noise. Also remember that dangerous currents often occur in the coastal zone.

Special tours are organized - sea trips on water transport with a visit to several bays for snorkeling. You can also rent a boat to move between the attractions of the island. If you prefer land travel, feel free to go to the desired bay on a motorbike or ATV.

Where to live on Koh Tao?

Koh Tao is a fairly new but rapidly developing holiday destination. More recently, tourists were met only by a couple of hotels and a small number of bungalows. Now you can rent both economy-class housing and a luxurious villa. The most popular rooms are in small hotels of the middle price segment.

Locations on Koh Tao are very different from each other. When choosing accommodation, consider what type of vacation you are interested in. The maximum intensity of tourist life awaits on Sayri. Mei Haad is located within walking distance, but renting accommodation is cheaper there. Chalok Baan Khao (in the south of the island) is quieter and calmer, while it has excellent infrastructure. There are still quite a few beaches and coves on the island, but they are mainly of interest to snorkelers and those who want to have a romantic adventure.
