How to get to Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is a stunning tropical paradise located in the southern region of Thailand. This small island is famous for its pristine beaches, crystal clear waters and abundant marine life making it a popular holiday destination for tourists from all over the world. This article contains detailed information on how to get to Koh Lipe from various starting points, including Bangkok, the southern resorts of Thailand, Malaysia and Phuket.

Since there is no airport on the island, the only way to get to the island is by sea. You can easily get to the island if you take into account the time of year in your travel plans - there are more routes from November to May - ferries and speedboats run from many nearby islands, including from the island of Langkawi (this is already neighboring Malaysia), and from the mainland (from Phuket, Lanta, Phi Phi and some others).

In the rainy (low) season, passenger traffic is less and sea traffic is only through Pak-Bara (or Pakbara). This is a small town from which transfers by sea to Koh Lipe start. The nearest city to Pak-Bara is called Hat-Yai (a little more than a hundred kilometers from Pak-Bara).

From Bangkok

If you start your trip in Bangkok, you have several options to get to Koh Lipe. The fastest and most convenient way is to fly from Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok to Trang Airport, located on the mainland next to the island. From Trang you can take a taxi or local bus to the pier and take the ferry to Koh Lipe. The flight to Trang takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.

The fastest way would be by plane. Bangkok has two international airports - Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang. At the same time, flights from Russia land in Suvarnabhumi, and planes fly to the city of Hat Yai from Don Muang. From one airport to another about 40 minutes drive, you can get there both by free shuttle and by taxi. The shuttle bus between the airports runs non-stop, but the journey takes about an hour. Taxi is a little faster. Further, you can either take a taxi directly to Pak-Bar (costs around 1000 baht, in rubles you can count it like this: one Thai baht is a little less than two and a half rubles), or get to the bus station in Hat Yai (taxi is about 400 baht , tuk-tuk - 150 baht), and from there get to the pier (about 2 hours by bus or taxi).

There are also special transfer tickets, they are sold at Don Muang Airport. One ticket includes both the flight and the transfer to Pak Bara and the ferry to the island. The price of such a ticket is almost the same as that which will have to be paid for independent travel, but on the other hand, all organizational issues have been decided in advance and tourists will be met at all intermediate points and brought to the place of departure of the next transport.

There are trains from Bangkok to Hat Yai. The night train departs from Thailand's main railway station, Hua Lamphong, in the evening and arrives at Hat Yai Station early in the morning.

And another economical option for transfer to Hat Yai is a bus, which travels all night (10-12 hours). The bus costs almost the same as the train, but it goes faster and arrives directly at the bus station.

Speedboats (speedboats) and ferries (ferries) go from Pak Bar to Koh Lipe. The price is about the same, but the ferry is slower. Boats, on the other hand, are less comfortable - small boats always shake more, the seats are less comfortable and not protected from splashes. The ferry accommodates twice as many people and has closed sides. We must also take into account that the boats run only during the daytime, so it is better to plan your trips so that you get to Pak Bara early.

From the southern resorts of Thailand

If you have already stopped at one of the southern resorts of Thailand, such as Krabi, Phuket or Khao Lak, getting to Koh Lipe is not difficult. Most resorts offer day trips to the island which include round trip transportation and a ferry to the island. This is a convenient option as it saves you the hassle of finding your way to the pier and taking the ferry on your own.

From Malaysia

Ko Lipe is located very close to the border with Malaysia, so this route can also be considered. Just 30 km Langkawi, Malaysian island. The port of departure for Langkawi is Kuah. It should only be noted that the border control point on Koh Lipe itself operates only from November to May, during the high season, and at other times it is necessary to obtain a crossing stamp on the mainland. This can be done in the Thai city of Satun, from it to go to Pak-Bara and further to the island. Additionally, consider the time difference so as not to get confused - between Langkawi and Koh Lipe minus 1 hour.

Near the Adang archipelago is the protected island of Tarutao, completely covered by the jungle and with little or no major tourist infrastructure. The strict rules of the reserve allow only small guest houses and bungalows to be built. Tarutao usually makes an intermediate stop for all ships going from Pak Bar to Lipe. The price of a ticket only to Tarutao is a hundred baht less.

From Phuket

Directly to Koh Lipe - by boat from Rassada Pier. In the high season it runs regularly, costs around 2100 baht, 4 hours on the way. Rassada Pier - quite crowded, but small, tickets are sold in several places by different agencies.

With stops - on a speedboat. Sailing longer - 5 hours, the price will be 3500 baht. Stops are made in Ngai, Phi Phi, Kradan, Muka and Boulogne.

Via Lanta - departure from the Rassada pier at 8.30 am and two hours later on the spot. It will cost more - about four thousand baht.

From Phuket it is also possible to go through the city of Hat Yai and Pak Bharu. There is a choice between bus or plane.

The most comfortable bus route is at night, called VIP 24. It starts at 21.45 and arrives at 6 in the morning. Then you need to get to the pier and transfer to the boat on Lipa (route at 9.30).

You can fly by plane for 1700 baht. A direct flight from Phuket to Hat Yai departs at 7.25 am and arrives at 8.30 am. If desired, you can purchase a transfer from the airport to the island, but the sale of such transfer tickets closes when there are three days left before the trip. Similar tickets can be bought at travel agencies.

It is impossible to get directly from the resort of Ao Nang (Krabi), only through Hat Yai by bus, minibus or taxi. The combined ticket costs about 1200 baht.

Once you arrive in Koh Lipe, you can enjoy all that this tropical paradise has to offer. Whether you want to relax on the beach, snorkel or explore the island's lush forests, Koh Lipe has something for everyone.

In conclusion, it should be noted that getting to Koh Lipe is very simple, no matter where you start from. Whether you are flying from Bangkok, departing from one of Thailand's southern resorts, flying in from Malaysia or traveling from Phuket, there are several options to help you reach this beautiful island. Start planning your trip today and experience the beauty of Koh Lipe for yourself!
